About AMUL

The full form of AMUL is Anand Milk Union Limited. It is an Indian dairy cooperative, based at Anand in the state of Gujarat. Formed in 1950, it is a managed by a cooperative body which today is jointly owned by 3.6 million milk producers in Gujarat.

Over seven decades ago the life of a farmer in Kaira was very much like that of farmers anywhere else in India. His income was derived almost entirely from seasonal crops. Many poor farmers faced starvation during off-seasons. Their income from milch buffaloes was undependable. The milk marketing system was controlled by contractors and middlemen. As milk is perishable, farmers were compelled to sell their milk for whatever they were offered. Often they had to sell cream and ghee at a throwaway price. 

the Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union Limited, Anand, Gujarat, popularly known as “Amul Dairy” is a Dairy Cooperative with a turnover of more than ₹ 5700/- crore. This Co-operative organization is created and owned by farmers and managed by professionals. It began its journey in 1946 and has inspired the nation in the Dairy Co-operative Movement to put India as the largest milk producing nation in the world. The brand “Amul” is known worldwide today and in India it is a household name.
